Eva Elizabeth was born eight weeks ago today. She has been busy… We spent the 4th of July Weekend at the family ranch in Joes Valley, Utah. Eva was, of course, the star of the show climbing her first mountain and forging her first freezing mountain stream (enjoying it all from the comfort of her bjorn,) tasting her first homemade root beer (in the form of milk from her mother who drank plenty) and meeting many new mountain friends including horses, cows, a snake and lots of bugs. She spent most of the weekend swaddled in a quilt in the loving arms of many adoring aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. Then we traveled to Boise for a week. Eva slept on the way there in the car, and on the way home on the airplane, what an adorable traveling companion. In Boise we napped in the hammock and sunned in the pool, but mostly held court for the many admirers who stopped by to meet the first Darger Grandchild. As we sat down for dinner our first night in Boise, Mom put Eva down on her tummy on a quilt in the family room so we could all eat together. Several minutes later to our proud astonishment, she rolled over. Just as surprised as we were, and probably a little frightened she immediately started crying. It was then that I realized this was probably the first time we’d put her down and left her alone for more than two minutes. Who knows what kind of amazing tricks she has to show us if we’ll just let her perform solo…I hope we haven’t irreparably stunted her performance development! Two days later on her six-week birthday, Eva introduced our favorite trick so far and slept through the night. Each evening we carefully retrace our steps of that night in Boise hoping to achieve the same outcome…with moderate success… Eva is plumping up beautifully and growing all of those favorite baby parts including the three-crease forearms, the soft and cushy hand pads, the generous ham-hock thighs and the round and chunky cheeks. She is quickly outgrowing her fabulous newborn wardrobe, which of course gives me fashion anxiety. As a result she is now forced to wear two to three outfits daily just to squeeze the most out of each gorgeous ensemble.
Just when we are brimming with boastful pride…at the brink of thinking our sweet baby is absolutely brilliantly perfect, she’ll humble us in a fit of excitement with arms and legs franticly flailing as she unknowingly reaches up and gouges her own cheek with her fingernail…and we remember that we all have much to learn!
